Cyber Security... It'll be OK...
ODOT is breached and tolling software shows it's vulnerability...
These past two weeks, those of us who live in Oregon have heard about the data breach which occurred at ODOT. 3.5 million license and Read ID holders had their information stolen in some form or fashion. FYI, there are only 3.2 million of us that hold an Oregon Drivers License.
To ODOT’s credit, this is sarcasm, they did not tell the public for 2 to 3 days after knowing they had been hacked. It was more important for them to try to catch the bad guys than it was to tell us to lock down our finances.
All this to say, no matter what ODOT says or does, they can not, nor will they, keep our information safe… and now they want it in order to have us pay for tolling. Remember it was Representative Susan McLain who said, at the Willamette Women Democrats meeting on April 12th, we have the information and know how much people are making… this in order to set a persons toll rate discount or not.
In Short
Article 1 - ODOT’s software partner, MOVEit Transfer, did what a lot of tolling partners have been doing in other states, messed up your finances. Whether losing it on the Dark Web or miss using it and charging you inappropriately, these tolling partners and DOT’s do not have a secure hold of things.
Article 2 - Playing Texas Hold ‘Em can be fun. Having Texas or in this case their tolling partner, Conduent State and Local Solutions, hold you hostage and over bill you is not fun. By the way, we have written about Conduent over the past 6 months as they are mentioned in a few ODOT tolling documents.
We are just glad that ODOT has everything under control.
Article 3 - ODOT is constantly selling us tolling by stating how easy it will be to pay. Simply drive under the gantry and ODOT, or Conduent, will take the money from your account or bill your credit card. Easy until delayed billing. or superfluous charges start to show up.
